Vanessa's Testimonial

Everything at the Centre was structured and organised-from the time I woke up to go to school, to the time I went to bed. Although I did not have much of a choice, on hindsight, it helped me to be more disciplined and to take more initiative. I found myself finishing my homework within the allotted time. A volunteer would help me in my weaker subjects. I also became more decisive especially in the area of my choices. Negative peer influences were so prevalent that I had to make vigilant choices.

Living in the Centre with others taught me good communication skills. Getting along with others was not an easy task. I had to listen to the other person’s viewpoint and not always think that mine was better. Therefore learning to give and take was very essential. The staff showed me what true love was – wanting the best for me. Deep down I knew that they truly cared for me although there were times where I would end up trying to rebel against some truths. I know that they cared for everyone at the Centre and all they said made lots of sense when I reflected on them.

Besides the normal routine, I enjoyed the school holidays where camps and other exciting activities would be planned for the girls. These moments helped me to build a stronger rapport with both staff and my fellow peers. Of course, I could never forget when everyone was preparing for a big musical. It was there that I truly saw how possible it was to work and live in a community.

Counselling sessions were scheduled for me during my stay at the Centre. This was the time where I could voice all my struggles, unhappiness and progress with my counsellor. The advice which were given have become strong guidelines for me now.

The Centre has definitely changed me to become a more wholesome person. I believe that one should learn from mistakes and make the necessary changes. Family and friends will definitely support and encourage you. What you reap in the future is what you plant today.
